Why EUROPE DOMINATES the RYDER CUP • For the past 44 years, Ken Brown has witnessed every memorable Ryder Cup moment – good and bad. On the eve of the 43rd matches at Whistling Straits in the United States, he reflects on the evolution of the European Team from gallant underdogs to dominant force no matter where the team event is played.

OUT BACK golf Rush • Over six weeks, more than 150 golfers swung and putted their way through the beautiful Queensland outback for one of the world’s unique golfing events. Our correspondent was among them.

But in stark contrast to the typical club player, DJ also plays with a shut or strong clubface… a truly powerful technique the slicing amateur would do well to consider.

POWER #2 • Golf coaches everywhere owe a debt to Matt Wolff for brilliantly illustrating a truth about technique: you don’t hit the ball on the backswing. If you’re discussing Matt’s position at the top, you can bet the word ‘funky’ is just around the corner; but a beat later, after he has gathered himself for the assault on the ball, he’s as orthodox as Tiger, Adam Scott or anyone else you care to mention, finding a pure ‘slot’ position that hits the ball long and straight. Sure, the backswing is formative and important, but Matt is living proof that it’s the quality of your delivery and impact that dictates the success of the shot.

SWEET STRIKE • Among club golfers, there is often a belief that a longer swing makes the ball go further. Tommy Fleetwood’s compact, powerful action proves just how much of a misconception this is. His compact swing minimises moving parts but maximises speed, delivering controlled power in...
